Which Gravel Is Right for Your Project?
Here’s a quick guide to help you pick the perfect material for your job.
| Gravel Type | Stone Size | Primary Use |
|---|---|---|
| Base Gravel | Mixed/crusite | Foundation layer |
| #4 | 1–2 inches | Drainage, erosion control |
| #57 | ½–1 inch | Driveways, parking, general use |
| #89 | ¼–½ inch | Top layer, paths, finishing |

Base Gravel
Base gravel is your starting point for any serious driveway or road project. It’s a mix of crushed stone and fine particles that compacts tightly to create a stable foundation.
Best for:
First layer under driveways
Road base for rural properties
Foundation prep for sheds, barns, or outbuildings. Filling low spots or soft areas before finishing with surface gravel.
Good to know: If you’re building a new driveway from scratch, you’ll want base gravel down first. It prevents sinking and rutting later.

#4 Gravel
These are larger stones, roughly 1 to 2 inches in size. #4 gravel is rugged and provides excellent drainage. Used by a lot of landscapers.
Best for:
Erosion control on slopes and ditches. Drainage projects and French drains. Heavy-traffic areas that need serious stability. Base layer for larger commercial projects
Good to know: #4 is too large to walk on comfortably, so it’s typically used where function matters more than foot traffic.

#57 Gravel
#57 is the most popular driveway gravel for good reason. These stones range from ½ inch to 1 inch and strike the perfect balance between drainage, stability, and appearance.
Best for:
Driveway top layers
Walkways and paths
Landscaping beds and borders
Parking areas
Pipe bedding and drainage
Good to know: This is what most people picture when they think “gravel driveway.” It locks together well, drains quickly, and looks clean.

#89 Gravel
#89 is the smallest option, with pea-sized stones around ¼ to ½ inch. It creates a smooth, clean surface and fills gaps nicely.
Best for:
Top-dressing existing driveways
Filling in between larger stones
Walkways and garden paths
Dog runs and play areas
Decorative landscaping
Good to know: #89 is comfortable to walk on and gives driveways a finished look. It works best over a base layer rather than on its own.
