Gravel Types

Base Gravel

The Foundation Layer

Base gravel is your starting point for any serious driveway or road project. It’s a mix of crushed stone and fine particles that compacts tightly to create a stable foundation.

Best for:
First layer under driveways
Road base for rural properties
Foundation prep for sheds, barns, or outbuildings. Filling low spots or soft areas before finishing with surface gravel.

Good to know: If you’re building a new driveway from scratch, you’ll want base gravel down first. It prevents sinking and rutting later.

#4 Gravel

The Foundation Layer

These are larger stones, roughly 1 to 2 inches in size. #4 gravel is rugged and provides excellent drainage. Used by a lot of landscapers.

Best for:
Erosion control on slopes and ditches. Drainage projects and French drains. Heavy-traffic areas that need serious stability. Base layer for larger commercial projects

Good to know: #4 is too large to walk on comfortably, so it’s typically used where function matters more than foot traffic.

#57 Gravel

The All-Purpose Favorite

#57 is the most popular driveway gravel for good reason. These stones range from ½ inch to 1 inch and strike the perfect balance between drainage, stability, and appearance.

Best for:
Driveway top layers
Walkways and paths
Landscaping beds and borders
Parking areas
Pipe bedding and drainage

Good to know: This is what most people picture when they think “gravel driveway.” It locks together well, drains quickly, and looks clean.

#89 Gravel

The Fine Finish

#89 is the smallest option, with pea-sized stones around ¼ to ½ inch. It creates a smooth, clean surface and fills gaps nicely.

Best for:
Top-dressing existing driveways
Filling in between larger stones
Walkways and garden paths
Dog runs and play areas
Decorative landscaping

Good to know: #89 is comfortable to walk on and gives driveways a finished look. It works best over a base layer rather than on its own.

About Us

Building, fixing, or finishing in Blue Ridge? Ellijay Gravel has the rock and the trucks to get the job done. We’re a family-owned gravel supplier based in neighboring Gilmer County, and as the sister company of HPC Services North Georgia, we’ve spent over 25 years moving aggregate across Fannin County for homeowners, builders, and contractors.

Our four grades cover every job in and around Blue Ridge. Base Gravel for new driveway foundations and pad work. #4 Gravel for drainage trenches, culverts, and French drain backfill. #57 Gravel — the most popular driveway grade — for surfacing, top dressing, and parking pads. #89 Gravel for walkway finishes, garden paths, and clean topcoats.

Right truck for the right job. Our 5-ton trucks handle smaller residential and finish loads. Our 16-ton trucks deliver volume work for new builds, full driveway resurfaces, parking areas, and commercial projects of any scale.

We deliver across Blue Ridge proper — downtown, the residential streets running off East Main and Old Highway 76, the neighborhoods along Highway 515, and the commercial corridors that run through the heart of Fannin County. From the city limits to the surrounding accessible communities of McCaysville, Epworth, and Cherry Log, if you’ve got a deliverable address and a project that needs gravel, we have what you need.

Beyond Blue Ridge, our delivery footprint covers Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, Cherokee, and Towns Counties. Residential driveway top-off. Commercial pad fill. New build foundation prep. Drainage repair. We carry the inventory, we run our own trucks, and we know the territory.

Family-owned. Locally run. Honest pricing with no surprises. Call Ellijay Gravel today for a quote on gravel delivery in Blue Ridge.
