Gravel Types

Base Gravel

The Foundation Layer

Base gravel is your starting point for any serious driveway or road project. It’s a mix of crushed stone and fine particles that compacts tightly to create a stable foundation.

Best for:
First layer under driveways
Road base for rural properties
Foundation prep for sheds, barns, or outbuildings. Filling low spots or soft areas before finishing with surface gravel.

Good to know: If you’re building a new driveway from scratch, you’ll want base gravel down first. It prevents sinking and rutting later.

#4 Gravel

The Foundation Layer

These are larger stones, roughly 1 to 2 inches in size. #4 gravel is rugged and provides excellent drainage. Used by a lot of landscapers.

Best for:
Erosion control on slopes and ditches. Drainage projects and French drains. Heavy-traffic areas that need serious stability. Base layer for larger commercial projects

Good to know: #4 is too large to walk on comfortably, so it’s typically used where function matters more than foot traffic.

#57 Gravel

The All-Purpose Favorite

#57 is the most popular driveway gravel for good reason. These stones range from ½ inch to 1 inch and strike the perfect balance between drainage, stability, and appearance.

Best for:
Driveway top layers
Walkways and paths
Landscaping beds and borders
Parking areas
Pipe bedding and drainage

Good to know: This is what most people picture when they think “gravel driveway.” It locks together well, drains quickly, and looks clean.

#89 Gravel

The Fine Finish

#89 is the smallest option, with pea-sized stones around ¼ to ½ inch. It creates a smooth, clean surface and fills gaps nicely.

Best for:
Top-dressing existing driveways
Filling in between larger stones
Walkways and garden paths
Dog runs and play areas
Decorative landscaping

Good to know: #89 is comfortable to walk on and gives driveways a finished look. It works best over a base layer rather than on its own.

About Us

Blairsville needs gravel — for new driveways, pad work, drainage, parking areas, and the everyday surfacing jobs that keep properties holding up against mountain weather. Ellijay Gravel delivers across Union County and the surrounding region. We’re family-owned, sister company to HPC Services North Georgia, with over 25 years of moving rock across North Georgia.

Four grades, each for the right job. Base Gravel for new driveway construction and load-bearing pads under homes, garages, and outbuildings. #4 Gravel for drainage work, French drains, culvert backfill, and erosion control. #57 Gravel — the standard driveway gravel — for surfacing, regrading, top dressing, and parking pads. #89 Gravel for the finer finish on walkways, paths, and patio underlayment.

Right truck for the right job. Our 5-ton trucks handle smaller residential loads and finish layers. Our 16-ton trucks deliver volume for new construction, full driveway resurfaces, commercial projects, and any job where bulk material moves the project forward.

We deliver to Blairsville’s in-town addresses, the residential streets and subdivisions, and the accessible commercial properties along the Highway 19/129 corridor. From downtown out to the Nottely Lake–area neighborhoods with road access, if your project sits at a deliverable address, we have the gravel and the truck.

Blairsville sits at the northern edge of our delivery area. We serve Union County and the surrounding region, including Towns, Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, and Cherokee Counties. Residential. Commercial. New construction. Repair work.
